Installing Windows 2008 with Hyper-v in Core version

Steps that you need to use to install and configure the Hyper-V on a Windows 2008 Core

Note the following:

• There is no way to upgrade from a previous version of the Windows Server operating system to a Server Core installation. Only a clean installation is supported.
• There is no way to upgrade from a full installation of Windows Server 2008 to a Server Core installation. Only a clean installation is supported.
• There is no way to upgrade from a Server Core installation to a full installation of Windows Server 2008. If you need the Windows® user interface or a server role that is not supported in a Server Core installation, you will need to install a full installation of Windows Server 2008.

·         Enable CPU virtualisation assistance and DEP in the BIOS.

·         Install Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 (Core Installation).

·         Determine the NIC ID: netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces.

·         Set the IP address for NIC, let say for NIC #2:
netsh interface ipv4 set address name=”2″ source=static address=192.168.1.20 mask=255.255.255.0 gateway=192.168.1.1

·         Set the DNS: netsh interface ipv4 add dnsserver name=”2″ address=192.168.1.2 index=1.

·         Rename server: netdom renamecomputer %computername% /NewName:HyperSvr1.

·         Reboot for that to take effect: shutdown /r /t 0.

·         Join it to domain: netdom join %computername% /domain:CONTOSO /userd:administrator /passwordd:*.

·         Reboot for that to take effect: shutdown /r /t 0.

        ·         Install the Hyper-V update: wusa.exe Windows6.0-KB950050-x64.msu.

·         Reboot.

 

·         Install the Hyper-V role: start /w ocsetup.exe Microsoft-Hyper-V.

·         Reboot.

·         Disable the firewall netsh firewall set opmode mode=disable

 

 

To manage a server running a Server Core installation by using a terminal server client:

1. On the server running a Server Core installation, type the following command at a command prompt:

      cscript C:WindowsSystem32Scregedit.wsf /ar 0

This enables the Remote Desktop for Administration mode to accept connections.

BTW, in order to view your current settings you can type:

      cscript C:WindowsSystem32Scregedit.wsf /ar /v

If you see "1" in the script output, that means that RDP connections are denied. If you see a "0", they will be allowed.

Note: If you are running the Terminal Services client on a previous version of Windows, you must turn off the higher security level that is set by default in Windows Server 2008. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt:

      cscript C:WindowsSystem32Scregedit.wsf /cs 0

To enable remote management from an RDP connection through the firewall

1. To enable remote management from any MMC snap-in, type the following:

      netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Desktop" new enable=yes (you may have already done this step)

To open an RDP session with the Server Core machine

1. On the remote management computer, click Start > Run, type mstsc, and then click OK.
      
2. In Computer, enter the name of the server running a Server Core installation, and click Connect.
      
3. Log on using an administrator account.

4. When the command prompt appears, you can manage the computer using the Windows command-line tools.

      Note that while you’re logged on to the server, the original server console session is locked out.

5. When you have finished remotely managing the computer, type logoff in the command prompt to end your Terminal Server session.

Also, from the command line of the Server Core box, type: c:windowssystem32cscript scregedit.wsf /cli   for a listing of all the command line references

Hyper-V Monitor Gadget for Windows Sidebar / Windows 7 and Vista Gadget for Hyper-V

Windows 7 and Vista Gadget for Hyper-V ( updated.: Version 4 )

• Hyper-V Monitor title
  Double click on the title to launch the Hyper-V Manager*.
• Host title
  Double click on the host title to launch a new Remote Desktop connection to the host.
• Host title RAM amount
  Displays the RAM amount the host has left.
• VM title
  Double click to launch VMConnect* to the VM.
• VM Status
  Displaying the status of the VM in both color and text.
• VM Control
  Hover over the status to get a set of buttons for the current VM. (Start, Turn Off, Shut Down and Save)
• Large Size (Undocked)
  You can make the gadget bigger by using the Large Size (Windows 7) or Undock it from the sidebar (Vista).

Backup/Protecting with Data Protection Manager 2007 ( DPM )- Part I

DPM it’s amazing. I started working with DPM last year and I could tell you that it did the backup task easier.
You could backup all Virtual Machines ( yeah!! online?!!! yeah!!! ), SQL Servers, Sharepoint Server, Exchange, Domain Controller, IIS Servers, File Servers and much more.

Now I ‘ll demonstrate how :

 

I will start talking about the DPM Administrator Console….

How to Use DPM Administrator Console to Administer DPM 2007

To use DPM Administrator Console, you must be logged on to the DPM server under a domain account that has administrator privileges.

DPM Administrator Console runs locally on the DPM server, but you can access the console remotely by using a Remote Desktop connection.

There are 5 Tabs in the Main Menu

• Monitoring. Here you will see the alerts and the information about all jobs ( running, failed, completed )
• Protection. Here you will select which data you want to backup by creating ‘Protections Groups’
• Recovery. Use this tab to recover the data that you have backup configured. You could restore for the original server, to another server running the same service, to a folder…
• Reporting. Use this option to get reports of your backup. As this feature uses Report Services, you could customize the reports
• Managment. Use this as the first step after install the DPM 2007. You need to use this option to instal the DPM agents, configure the DISKs to store the data, configure the Tape Library ( you dont have one, you could use a software called Firestreamer to simulate a tape library )

To run DPM Administrator Console on the DPM server

• On the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007, and then click Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007.

-Or-

Double-click the Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 icon on the desktop.

To access DPM Administrator Console remotely

1. On the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.
2. In the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box, enter the name of the DPM server in the Computer box and then click Connect.
3. On the Log On to Windows dialog box, enter the login information for a domain user account that has administrator privileges.
4. On the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007, and then click Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007.

-Or-

Double-click the Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 icon on the desktop.

Gerenciando o Windows 2008 Core Server usando uma aplicação GUI

 

Pois é, o  Guilermo Musumeci criou uma aplicação GUI que permite você gerenciar o Windows 2008 Core, usando uma interface GUI

Com essa aplicação, é possivel fazer o windows update, editar o registro do windows, o explorer, notepad, eventviewer e outros usando uma interface grafica.

 

O único detalhe é que você tem de fazer isso diretamente na máquina, ou através de do Remote Desktop. Ou seja, o programa deve estar instalado e rodando na maquina onde o Windows Server Core roda.

Gerenciando o Hyper-V usando o Windows 7

   Se você, assim como eu já está usando o Windows 7 e precisa gerenciar o Hyper-V, então você vai precisar instalar o RSAT para windows 7

    Steps:

    1. Faca o Download do RSAT para Windows http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=82516c35-c7dc-4652-b2ea-2df99ea83dbb&displaylang=en

   

  2. Click YES, para proceder com a instalação

 

Uma das novas features to novo Windows Server 2008R2 é o Remote Server Manager. Esa nova feature vai permitir que REMOTAMENTE você habilite Roles/Features re no servidor. Assim, se você tem o Windows 7 você pode não só gerenciar as roles/features do Windoqs 2008 R2, mas também pode adicionar ou removê-las.
